Right now, I am sitting in Portland’s Ace Hotel, on my bed, drinking a local organic Belgian style beer, and listening to the beat of the coffee shop below. I am the farthest thing from where I was two weeks ago…
On the date that our coach suggested the local 5k, I decided to up that just a bit and go for the 50. Why not, right?! I didn’t really mention it, but we were actually scheming for quite some time… it was like being a mischievous child, planning this 50km instead of the 5km.
The candidates? The crazy ultra marathon / social entrepreneurial crew: myself, Tara Berry, and Katie Wadden. The three of us harbour notions of conquering the world through adventure, running extreme distances, and new outlooks to create social change, and thankfully Katie is getting her PhD to back us up in a legitimate way.
Event Lead-Up I signed up for the event immediately, in January, and later convinced Katie over a night out, facilitated by a few drinks. Tara was injured at the time, so there was no way she was running it! But the tides changed in ways we could never anticipate: Tara went on to recuperate her Achilles tendon two weeks before the event, and she was easily keeping up in our 35km trail runs. The three of us were going to run it as an awesome team.
Disaster! The night before the event, bags packed and all, KATIE GOT SUPER SICK! It was like a bullet to my heart, reading her text message and realizing that for all this excitement, all this build-up, she could not go on…
And so, Tara was to run in Katie’s name, as she hadn’t registered yet anyway. On Friday after work, we set off down to Bellingham!
Story to be continued…
